Admissions
St. Dominics is the school for the Parish of the Church of the Annunciation Woodchester, which includes Nailsworth, Minchinhampton and the surrounding districts. Although a Catholic school, children from the wider community are welcome. Admissions arrangements allow the Headteacher to offer places to:

  • Catholic children living in the Parish of the Annunciation
  • Children with siblings already in the school
  • Catholic children living in any other Parish
  • Children whose parents wish them to receive a Christian education to support the teachings of their own Christian faith
  • Children of other faiths
  • Children of no faith

Parents are informed of their allocated school by the County Council in the Spring term.

Admission to Y1-Y6 will be on request, unless the appropriate year group is full, ie. admissions have reached the standard number of 15. In the event of this happening, the Headteacher will consult with the governors before making a decision.

It is hoped through this policy, to preserve the friendly family atmosphere of the school. If you wish to consider St. Dominic's School for your son or daughter, please contact the Headteacher to arrange a visit. Back to top
Reception

The early weeks at school can be difficult for young children. St. Dominic's aims to make this introduction period as happy and stress free as possible - for both the children and the parents! Children spend time in their new class in the summer term prior to starting school, and those with siblings at St. Dominic's often come in for storytime during the summer time.

Entry in September is part-time, five mornings per week, then slowly building up to a full five days by half term. These arrangements are always flexible, depending on the child's readiness for school.

Parents are welcome to bring their child into the classroom at the start of the school day, not just in September but throughout the year. The school welcomes this opportunity for parents to see their child's classroom and have contact with their teacher.

During their early days, Reception children are looked after by the older children, particularly during playtime and lunchtime. New children therefore settle very quickly into St. Dominic's and soon feel secure and confident to become more independent.

Class Organisation and Approach
The children spend their first three years in the ground floor classrooms. The older children are in the two classrooms on the first floor, and on the same level as the hall which has a ground floor entrance! The arrangement of classes provides excellent continuity and a secure environment in which children can learn. Work will be tailored to each child. supporting the child as appropriate and regularly challenging him/her, thereby ensuing progression.

Throughout the school children are encouraged to develop care, concern and respect for others, and to grow in self-reliance and personal responsibility.

Children spend the majority of the day with their class teacher who is responsible for their academic progress and pastoral care. Teachers may take other classes for specialist subjects and the Headteacher often works in all classes.

Teachers use a variety of teaching methods with all age groups. These include class lessons, group work and individual tasks, which allow all children to develop at their optimum pace. The children are taught through the use of topics, and there is also subject-based teaching where appropriate. In most lessons teachers plan seperately for each year group. When taught as a whole group, the older children in the class are expected to demonstrate a wider and more proficient range of skills and knowledge. This is always tempered by the teacher's knowledge of each child.

Each child's progress is assessed in a variety of ways:

  • by checking that the child is able to complete the task set for him/her
  • through the results of simple tests as the child gets older
  • through regular assessments linked to the National Cirriculum
  • through the National Curriculum tests and tasks at age 7 and 11

Teachers also discuss with each child and his/her parents their view about the child's progress.

The School Policy

Discipline

Children are expected to be respectful and obedient to their teachers and considerate towards others. The school has a few rules for child's safety and to encourage the development of good working habits, such as - walk quietly and carefully around the school. If there are any persistent problems at school, the class teacher will immediately inform parents. Similarly parents are encouraged to bring matters of concern to the attention of the school.

As the children grow older, they are expected to show greater responsibility and to share with the staff an interest in the wellbeing of all the children in the school. This envolves for example, sharing in the care and occupation of younger children at lunch and break times.
